Heritage & Natural Context

The Story of Galle Fort

An impeccably preserved UNESCO coastal fortress where European colonial architecture blends with tropical Sri Lankan heritage. Cobblestone lanes are lined with boutique hotels, jewelers, art galleries, and historic ramparts.

First fortified by the Portuguese in 1588 following their arrival on the southern coast, Galle was substantially rebuilt and expanded into an imposing 36-hectare fortified city by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in 1663. Thick coral-and-granite ramparts withstood the 2004 tsunami, shielding the historic settlement within. Today, Galle Fort is Asia's best-preserved living European colonial fortress, home to a multi-ethnic community of artists, writers, jewelers, and hoteliers dwelling inside restored Dutch gables, British colonial verandas, and ancient mosques.
