What’s SPECIAL about Sri Lanka?

PEOPLE & CHARACTER

By and large, Sri Lankan’s are an easy-going and accepting bunch. Across Sri Lanka’s cultures, people tend to be warm, very hospitable, and helpful. So much so, that hospitality can find yourself invited over to anyone’s house, even if you have just met them. They are equally empathic, tolerant, not very aggressive, shy, and expect a smiling hospitality with a fervent devotion to tradition.

Sri Lanka’s climate is tropical with high temperatures in the lowlands, and lower temperatures at high altitudes in the Central Highlands. The weather is marked by distinct rainy and dry seasons; but regional differences brings rain to different parts of the country at different times, forming the basis of a distinction between a Wet Zone and a Dry Zone.

ENTERTAINMENT

Sri Lanka’s after-dark entertainment is still nascent but is starting to blossom, especially in Colombo. However, entertainment in hotels and tourist centres, restaurants, and nightclubs are plentiful, but finding a spot for sunset drinks is an essential experience.
Sri Lanka is a multicultural country, with people from varied religions and origins, each with its own cultural heritage. Sri Lanka is home to four main ethnic groups, namely the predominantly Buddhist Sinhalese, Tamils (mostly Hindus), Moors (island’s Muslims) and the Burghers (descendants of Portuguese, Dutch and British. While cultures vary significantly across these groups, most Sri Lankans exhibits some form of Indian, Buddhist, Islamic, and European influences. Unique cultures can also be found among the indigenous Vaddahs (the original inhabitants) in remote parts of the country.

CULTURE

LANGUAGE

Sinhala and Tamil are the national languages in Sri Lanka, and widely used in media, commerce, and administration; closely followed by English, which is commonly described as a lingua franca. Most Sri Lankans, however, speak English with a few exceptions in rural areas where it’s hard to get by without a local tour guide.
A historical crossroads for trade, Sri Lanka (formally Ceylon) has a history shaped by waves of immigrants, invaders, missionaries, traders and travellers from around the world. A former British colony, Sri Lanka achieved its full independence in 1948 and rapidly became a major economic and tourist hot spot in the region.
