The Story of Kandy

The last independent kingdom of Sri Lanka, surrounded by forested hills and centered around a tranquil lake. Kandy remains the spiritual heart of Ceylon Buddhism and a living center of traditional artisan crafts.

Surrounded by misty forested ridges and anchored by its tranquil man-made lake, Kandy held out as an independent royal kingdom for more than three centuries against Portuguese and Dutch colonizers, finally succumbing to the British in 1815. The focal point of the city is the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic), where the sacred canine tooth of Gautama Buddha has been venerated and protected since ancient times as the supreme symbol of sovereign power. Every year in July or August, the city erupts in the world's most spectacular pageant—the Kandy Esala Perahera—where caparisoned tuskers, hundreds of fire jugglers, and virtuoso Kandyan dancers parade the sacred relic casket through moonlit streets.

Serene Concierge Insider Secrets

Curated advice from Susan & Dinesh (20+ Years On-Ground in Ceylon)

Attend the Evening Thevava Ceremony: Arrive at the Temple of the Tooth around 18:15 PM for the evening drum puja, when golden doors open to reveal the relic stupa amidst chanting and lotus offerings.
Peradeniya Botanical Gardens Orchid House: Spend two peaceful hours wandering under the giant Javanese fig tree and viewing rare indigenous orchid blooms at the royal botanical grounds.
Dress Respectfully for Sacred Grounds: Both women and men must cover shoulders and knees in white or light-colored attire; shoes must be checked in at the outer temple gateway.
