Heritage & Natural Context

The Story of Yala National Park

Sri Lanka's most renowned wildlife sanctuary bordering the Indian Ocean. Yala's dramatic landscape combines thorny scrub jungle, freshwater lakes, and rocky outcrops home to leopards, Asian elephants, sloth bears, and 215 bird species.

Spanning nearly 1,000 square kilometers across the southeastern coast, Yala National Park was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900. Block 1 is globally celebrated by zoologists for harbouring the world's highest recorded concentration of leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya). Because the island has no competing apex predators like lions or hyenas, Sri Lankan leopards have evolved to be larger, bolder, and more confident day hunters, frequently lounging across exposed granite boulders or crossing tracks in plain daylight.

Serene Concierge Insider Secrets

Curated advice from Susan & Dinesh (20+ Years On-Ground in Ceylon)

Choose a Customized Open-Top 4x4 Jeep: Never compromise on safari vehicles; Serene Vacations reserves heavy-duty custom 4x4 jeeps with elevated tiered seating, binoculars, and experienced naturalist trackers.
Book Both Dawn and Dusk Game Drives: Leopards are crepuscular hunters; the 06:00 AM dawn safari offers optimal soft light, while the 15:00 PM drive provides prime sightings around watering holes.
Stay in an Eco-Lodge Near the Gate: Staying within 15 minutes of the Palatupana or Katagamuwa gate allows you to be among the first vehicles entering the park at first light.
